Online IDA: How it Works
Category:
Online IDA combines complex IDA management information requirements with critical financial transaction needs. The system is a shared, web-based utility designed to support the needs of several user classes. At its core, Online IDA is a modified and adapted version of SunGard's state-of-the-art online 401(k) processing system which serves millions of employees across the U.S. The system consists of a:
- Pooled asset account – a single account that aggregates users' funds (both savings and match funds), allows transactions to be processed at an "omnibus" level and can easily be configured to allow small savers access to mutual fund investment products.
- Record keeping system – a database that tracks individual users' holdings (sub-accounts), manages data and issues reports about users and account activity, issues payment instructions for distributions and automatically conveys trade orders to a custodian and transfer agent.
- Secure web site – an interface linked to the record keeping system that allows users to enroll in an IDA program online, make investment elections, check their holdings and conduct transactions (withdrawal requests, account transfers, address updates, etc.). The site is hosted on a SunGard server, is completely scalable with a variable cost structure at scale.
Online IDA serves three user classes:
- IDA Participants – individuals that open and invest in IDAs.
- Program Sponsors – organizations that run an IDA program, including management of match funds until such funds are earned by IDA participants. Program sponsors may one day include employers, unions, schools and universities or faith-based organizations.
- Bank / User Support Staff – bank and/or D2D call center staff, funders or others that play a part in system operations or are authorized to view consolidated program data.
